Andrew William Mellon (1855–1937), often known as “A.W. Mellon,” was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Mellon’s father, Thomas Mellon, was a prominent lawyer and banker in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Mellons were of Scotch-Irish extraction, Thomas’s father having emigrated in 1816 from County Tyrone in Ireland (now Northern Ireland).
