Both Carlo and Letizia were Corsican. Carlo’s family, of ancient Italian nobility, had emigrated to Corsica in the 16th century. The French form of the family name, Bonaparte, was not commonly used, even by Napoleon, until after the spring of 1796. The original, Italian name was Buonaparte.
