Prince Fumimaro Konoe (Japanese: 近衞 文麿, Hepburn: Konoe Fumimaro, 12 October 1891 – 16 December 1945) was a Japanese politician who served as prime minister of Japan from 1937 to 1939 and from 1940 to 1941.
Konoe Fumimaro (born October 12, 1891, Tokyo, Japan—died December 16, 1945, Tokyo) was a political leader and prime minister of Japan (1937–39, 1940–41), who tried unsuccessfully to restrict the power of the military and to keep Japan’s war with China from widening into a world conflict.
In 1937 he formed the first Konoe cabinet. With the Marco Polo Bridge Incident in July the same year, Japan went into all-out war with China and as a central figure of the shintaisei movement (to establish a new political system modeled on the German Nazis) he served as Prime Minister three times.
Konoe opposed European colonialism in Asia, advocating more strident Japanese leadership in the region. With the support of the political establishment, he was appointed President of the upper chamber in 1933. During the 1930s, he was at the centre of Japan's political life, and formed his first government in 1937.
