Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph (Ritter von) Schelling wird am 27. Januar 1775 in Leonberg, Württemberg als ältester Sohn des Diakons Josephus Friedrich Schelling und seiner Ehefrau Gottliebin Marie, geb. Cleß geboren. Er stammt aus einer schwäbischen Pfarrersfamilie, die der protestantischen Mystik und dem Pietismus anhing.
