22. Dez. 2016 · Too many Christmas albums are mere novelty cash-ins, but Emmylou Harris put her heart into LIGHT OF THE STABLE, and it shows. The set grew from the title track, a 1975 single that featured Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Neil Young on backing vocals, with the bulk of the material recorded alongside Harris' ROSES IN THE SNOW sessions, and reflecting the pristine intimacy of that release.

The 1992 Warner release was a remastered version of the original with a different album cover. The latest edition was released in 2004 by Rhino Records.
Her stunning a cappella version of “The First Noel” echoes long after it finishes, while “Christmas Time’s A-Coming” is a gentle country canter with sweetly cooing harmonies. Speaking of harmonies, you can hear guests Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and Neil Young on some tracks, including the heavenly hallelujahs of the title track.

The album closes with the brilliant Light of the stable, which features Neil Young, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt on harmony vocals. Emmylou and her band were in top form when they recorded this album. A couple of extra upbeat songs might have made this album even better, but it's still a great album for those quieter moments around Christmas ...
