Vanda werd geboren als Johannes Jacob Hendrickus van den Berg, zoon van een Nederlandse vader en een Poolse moeder. Vader vond werk als mess-bediende bij de Koninklijke Luchtmacht op het vliegveld Ypenburg. Vanda groeide op in Rijswijk.
