He was the music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic for 17 years, during which time he was responsible for the building of Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall. He is currently the Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of London's Philharmonia Orchestra.
He is the cofounder—and until 2018 served as Artistic Director—of the annual Baltic Sea Festival. He was the music director of the San Francisco Symphony and conductor laureate of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Philharmonia Orchestra in London and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra.
Esa-Pekka Salonen war von 2010 bis 2013 Residenzkünstler am Konzerthaus Dortmund und gestaltete das Zeitinsel-Festival im September 2010. 2015 bis 2018 war er Composer in Residence bei den New Yorker Philharmonikern.
