I believe his children sold. When george jr died, his shares went to Virginia instead of his kids. Papa bear also gave Virginia‘s 11 kids and George jr’s 2 kids an equal share. But when George jr died, his kids ended up selling their portion to Virginia. There was some lawsuit but I don’t know what it entailed.

The estate of George Halas, Jr., owned 30.5 shares representing a 19.68% interest in the Bears.
