American Hustle ist eine große Christian-Bale-Show. Der britische Mime, der vorrangig für Rollen als gut gebauter American Psycho oder Batman bekannt ist, beweist hier Mut zur Hässlichkeit. Dass Bale auch körperlich an Grenzen zu gehen bereit ist, hatte er bereits mit seiner Rolle als The Machinist (2004) bewiesen, für die er abmagerte, bis man die Knochen sah.
