Deemed too elitist by Parks Commissioner Robert Moses, it was razed in 1937 and a playground (named for Mary Harriman Rumsey, a well-known philanthropist and social reformer) created in its place. The Mother Goose statue, which marks the playfield entrance, was added at this time. The playground was not well-used and fell into disrepair.
Mary Rumsey's legacy to New Deal reforms would be continued by her younger brother, W. Averell Harriman. Averell was encouraged by his older sister to leave his finance job and join her and their friends, the Roosevelts, to advance the goals of the New Deal. Averell joined the NRA, marking the beginning of his political career.

28. Feb. 2020 · After decades of use, Rumsey Playground became rundown. In 1985, the Conservancy remade it as a place to play sports; soon after, it became used as a venue for performances. A plaque at the entrance reminds of us of Mary Harriman Rumsey’s involvement in its creation as well as her lifelong philanthropy and dedication to her community.
