Luchino Visconti est le fils de Giuseppe Visconti di Modrone, duc de Grazzano Visconti (1879-1941), et de Carla Erba (née en 1879 et morte à Cortina d'Ampezzo le 17 janvier 1939 ). Par son père, il descend de la grande aristocratie italienne : la famille Visconti régna en effet sur Milan jusqu'au XVe siècle.
