Kritiker bezeichneten den Film als ein Meisterwerk, und man verlieh ihm zwei Oscars. Im Mai 2001 war der Film unter dem Titel APOCALYPSE NOW REDUX erneut bei den Filmfestspielen in Cannes zu sehen, dieses Mal in der Fassung wie sie Coppola schon 1979 konzipierte, aber damals aus verschiedenen Gründen nicht in die Kinos bringen konnte.
