  1. Cook and Peary: The Race to the Pole is an unabashedly biased recreation of the controversy concerning the "conquering" of the North Pole. Robert E. Peary (Rod Steiger), a US Navy commander and shameless self-promoter, sets out through Arctic wastes in 1909 to discover the Pole, an expedition that many others have attempted but failed to complete.

  2. Exploration buffs are still arguing about Dr. Cook's credentials and Peary's claim to the North Pole. Chamberlain and Steiger are certainly more than qualified to portray these real life explorer's and it is a shame that scripting,direction and special effects give this film below average ratings, especially if one is a history buff.

  7. Lieutenant Peary planned his attempt at the North Pole over a number of years. In 1899 he approved taking a party of young college graduates on the resupply ship DIANA. They were known as the North Greenland Hunting Party. As part of the plan, they later became supporters in his Peary Arctic Club.
