Woodbury graduated from Dartmouth College in 1809, and after studying law he was admitted to the bar in 1812. He thereafter served as an associate justice of the New Hampshire Superior.

  4. Formally nominated by President Polk on December 23, 1845, Woodbury was confirmed by The Senate on January 3, 1846, making him the first Associate Justice to have attended a law school. Woodbury served on the Supreme Court for five years and died on September 4, 1851, at the age of sixty-one.
