Jonas Edward Salk wurde am 28. Oktober 1914 in New York City als ältester von drei Söhnen der russisch-jüdischen Einwanderer Daniel und Dora Salk geboren. While serving as the head of the Virus Research Lab at the University of Pittsburgh, Salk discovered and perfected the first vaccine found to be safe and effective in preventing polio or infantile paralysis, one of the most-feared and crippling diseases of the early 20th century.
