Gabrielle Renard (1879-1959) joined the Renoir household staff when Madame Renoir was expecting her second child, who turned out to be Jean, the future cinematographer. The painting entitled Gabrielle and Jean belongs to a vast array of works depicting these two protagonists, works that reflect a broad range of techniques.

By the time their second child, Jean, was born in 1894, they were able to hire a nanny, and Aline, now Madame Renoir, looked to her home village, and her family, for an appropriate person to fill this role.
