Deadwood Map. Deadwood is a city in South Dakota, United States, and the county seat of Lawrence County. It is named for the dead trees found in its gulch. The population was 1,270 according to a 2010 census. The city includes the Deadwood Historic District, a National Historic Landmark District, whose borders may be the city limits.
20. Feb. 2024 · History. In 1876, Deadwood was born when a rush of gold miners flocked to the Black Hills of South Dakota, looking for riches and a better way of life. Almost overnight the town was booming and attracted outlaws, gamblers, and gunslingers. Some of them included notables like Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, and Madam Mustache.
