Aldrichs Film aus dem Jahr 1954 ist ein früher und seltener Versuch, den Indianern in einem amerikanischen Western Gerechtigkeit widerfahren zu lassen. Allerdings hatte Aldrichs Drehbuchvorlage keinen versöhnlichen Schluss. Dass der Film mit einem Hollywood konformen Ende daherkommt, ist aus dem Mist der Produzenten Harold Hecht und Burt Lancaster, der auch die Hauptrolle spielt, gewachsen.
