Grigory Yevseyevich Zinoviev was born on 23 September 1883 in Yelizavetgrad, Russian Empire. Though his birth name was Hirsch Apfelbaum, he was also known as Ovsei-Gershon Aronovich Radomyslsky. The Soviet politician Grigori Evseevich Zinoviev (1883-1936) served the Russian Communist party in several high positions between 1901 and 1927. Opposed by Stalin, he was executed after a dramatic purge trial. Although he did not possess Lenin's decisive leadership abilities and strong will, Grigori Zinoviev was a man of intense ambition.
After Lenin's death, Zinoviev was in contention for the Soviet leadership. He sided with Stalin and Kamenev against Trotsky, but then tried to oppose the increasingly powerful Stalin and Bukharin.
