Jan. 1998 · Banjo is handled mostly by Rob McCoury and the superb Craig Smith, and Del McCoury adds two fine lead vocals, the jaunty “We’re Steppin’ Out Tonight” and Marty Stuart and Harlan Howard’s mournful “Oh, What A Silent Night”. On the latter, Stuart and Ronnie McCoury share harmonies and trade mandolin breaks.
Aside from his longtime employer, Ricky Skaggs, Hicks is joined by Marty Stuart, Del McCoury, Ronnie McCoury, Rob McCoury, and others. Fiddle Patch is a fun, toe-tapping set that respects Hicks' bluegrass roots while leavening them with other influences. Altogether, an album to enjoy.
Whether out in front of a fiddle tune or in a supporting role, Hicks shows why he remains one of the best. His tone and sense of timing are impeccable. He's joined here by Ronnie & Rob McCoury, Craig Smith, Buddy Spicher, Charlie Cushman, Bryan Sutton, Marty Stuart and Skaggs. It's easy to take Hicks for granted. He's been so good for so long.
