The studio paid out 400 million for the rights to the IP from the original film and novel, and got the geniuses that did the final three Halloween films to commit to a trilogy. They only had a working title for the first two: Exorcist: Believer and Exorcist: Deceiver. The box office and the critical reception was so awful that the trilogy plan was scrapped.
