29. Aug. 2023 · After many years endorsing strings from other manufacturers, Tony Rice now has a signature set from Martin. He has long favored strings made with monel, a nickel-based alloy, rather than steel. In fact he used Martin’s monel strings as a younger artist, until they were discontinued more than 30 years ago.
The MTR13 Retro acoustic guitar strings represent yet another quality, vintage-inspired set of strings in Martin’s Retro line. Encouraged by legendary bluegrass player Tony Rice, Martin was inspired to bring back the tone of 1930s strings, when nickel ruled the acoustic world.

6. Jan. 2022 · Tony Rice was more than a guitar player – he was an innovative musician that helped flattop acoustic guitar players strive to be better. His influence is impossible to miss when listening to modern bluegrass music and stretches out into many other genres as well.
It was in 1960 when a 9-year-old bluegrass performer named Tony Rice – a recent transplant to Southern California and a guitarist in a family band, just like Clarence White – spotted the guitar backstage at a music show that was being broadcast over a local radio station.
Legendary Bluegrass artist, Tony Rice, played Martin Monel strings religiously on Clarence White's 1935 D28 until they became unavailable in the 1970's and he has been missing them ever since.
