Irland ([ˈɪʁlant], amtlicher deutscher Name; irisch Éire [ˈeːrʲə] anhören ⓘ /?, englisch Ireland) ist ein Inselstaat in Westeuropa. Er umfasst etwa fünf Sechstel der gleichnamigen Insel sowie eine Vielzahl kleinerer Inseln, welche ihr – überwiegend im Westen des Landes – vorgelagert sind.
Die Insel Irland ist etwa 450 km lang und rund 260 km breit und liegt im Atlantik. Insgesamt hat sie eine Fläche von etwa 84.421 km². Sie ist damit die drittgrößte Insel Europas und die zwanzigstgrößte der Welt.
Die Geschichte Irlands umfasst die Entwicklungen auf der Insel Irland von der Urgeschichte bis 1922 und die folgende Entwicklung des Irischen Freistaats und der Republik Irland bis zur Gegenwart.
