Don Carlos Buell began his military career after graduating 32nd out of 52 from the United States Military Academy in 1841. He fought against the Florida Indians, and served on garrison frontier duty.

Don Carlos Buell (born March 23, 1818, near Marietta, Ohio, U.S.—died Nov. 19, 1898, Rockport, Ky.) was a Union general in the American Civil War. Buell graduated from West Point in 1841 and was a company officer of infantry in the Seminole War of 1841–42 and the Mexican War.
A highly capable organizer and administrator, Don Carlos Buell lost his field command for failing to follow up the retreating Confederates after the battle of Perryville. But his friendship for the deposed McClellan may have contributed to his removal.
