The school opened in 1882 as the city's first black school, during the era of formal racial segregation in the United States. Though the high school closed in 1973, the building reopened as an elementary school in 1998.

    I.M. Terrell High School closed in 1973 and was re-opened in 1998 as an elementary campus. The elementary campus closed in June 2016. The school, a Texas historical site, became the I. M. Terrell Academy for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) and VPN (Visual and Performing Arts) in August 2018, a FWISD Gold Seal High School of Choice.
