"Woodward taped Trump." -> "Woodward digitally recorded Trump." "Recorded" alone doesn't quite work - you can record a conversation with a pencil and a shorthand pad.

I use gaffer's tape, also known as stage tape to keep the audio cables at our church's stage from tripping the musicians. It looks like duct tape, but it comes in colors to match the flooring and it is removable, like painter's masking (blue or green) tape.

It is a pejorative term, denoting a crude, two-wheeled carriage that gave a very rough, uncomfortable ride. Literally, I think it could be translated as, "bottom-whacker."
