The principle sources of international law are enumerated in Article 38 of the Statute of the International Court of Justice, a treaty ratified by all 193 members of the United Nations. He noted that general principles of law are an important component of the international legal system and that this source of international law could be usefully clarified by the Commission almost a century after its inclusion in Article 38 of the Statute of the Permanent Court of International Justice.
