Formed in 1960, the group originally consisted of Sam "Little Sonny" Brown, Eugene "Bird" Daughtry, Phillip "Phil" Terry and Robert "Big Sonny" Edwards. In 1969, Sam Brown was replaced as lead singer by Bobby Starr, only to rejoin the group in 1973.

They were pure Philly Soul, neither as pop-oriented as the Motown groups of the day, or as funky and gritty as the Stax/Volt lineup.
The Intruders were originally formed as a doo wop group in 1960, and sang around Philadelphia for several years. Lead singer Sam “Little Sonny” Brown, Eugene “Bird” Daughtry, Phil Terry, and Robert “Big Sonny” Edwards signed with Gamble and Huff’s fledgling Gamble label in 1966.
Known as The Intruders, Sam “Little Sonny” brown, Eugene “Bird” Daughtry, Phillip “Phil” Terry, and Robert “Big Sonny” Edwards all had aspirations of singing professionally worldwide before thousands of admiring fans. Their desire to perform and record music came to fruition in 1961.
