The American Jazz Orchestra was an American big band jazz ensemble founded in New York City, active from 1986 to 1993. The ensemble was formed by Roberta Swann and Gary Giddins in 1986; John Lewis was its inaugural bandleader. The ensemble played in its early years in the Great Hall at Cooper Union.

John Aaron Lewis (May 3, 1920 – March 29, 2001) was an American jazz pianist, composer and arranger, best known as the founder and musical director of the Modern Jazz Quartet.
Auch bei seinem letzten Konzert in Deutschland, 1992 auf dem „Jazzgipfel Stuttgart“, trat er mit seinem Modern Jazz Quartet und dem klassischen Kammerorchester „Arcata“ in einem Third-Stream-Kontext auf. Lewis war auch als Jazzpädagoge einflussreich.

John Aaron Lewis (3 May 1920 – 29 March 2001) was an American jazz pianist and composer best known as the musical director of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Born in LaGrange, Illinois and raised in Albuquerque, NM, he learned classical music and piano from his mother. He served in the Army in World War II, where he met Kenny Clarke.
