Leben. Erskine Hawkins gründete während seiner Ausbildung 1935 am Alabama State Teachers College sein erstes Orchester [1] und ging ein Jahr später nach New York, wo er schnell populär wurde und insgesamt zehn Jahre im Savoy Ballroom in Harlem auftrat. Der Stil des Orchesters war anfangs von Jimmie Lunceford und Count Basie geprägt.
Erskine Ramsay Hawkins (July 26, 1914 – November 11, 1993) was an American trumpeter and big band leader from Birmingham, Alabama, dubbed "The 20th Century Gabriel". He is best remembered for composing the jazz standard " Tuxedo Junction " (1939) with saxophonist and arranger Bill Johnson .
