   Eine jesuitische Akademie, die Neoacademia Zagrabiensis, wurde am 23. September 1669 vom Kaiser Leopold I. in seiner Eigenschaft als König von Kroatiengegründet. Im Jahre 1861 schlug der römisch-katholische Bischof Josip Juraj Strossmayer dem kroatischen Parlament die Gründung einer Universität zu Zagreb vor, wozu Kaiser Franz Joseph I. noch im gleichen Jahr ein Dekret unterzeichnete und dieses schließlich am 5.
