Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, GCMG, NGIV, (Arabic: مأمون عبد القيوم; Dhivehi: މައުމޫން ޢަބްދުލް ޤައްޔޫމް; born 29 December 1937) is a Maldivian politician who served as President of the Maldives from 1978 to 2008.

Maumoon Abdul Gayoom (mämōōn´ äb´dōōl gīōōm´), 1937–, Maldivian political leader, president of the Maldives (1978–2008), b. Malé. He studied at Al-Azhar Univ. in Cairo, then was a research assistant at the American Univ., Cairo (1967–69) and taught at Ahmadu Bello Univ., Zaria, Nigeria (1969–71).
Maumoon Abdul Gayoom wurde am 29. Dez. 1937 als Sohn des Juristen Scheich Abdul Gayoom Ibrahim und Khadheeja Moosa in der maledivischen Hauptstadt Male' geboren. G. war das zehnte von 25 Kindern seines Vaters, der lange für die Regierung gearbeitet hatte und zuletzt Generalstaatsanwalt war.
