His impressive new CD Somewhere Near Paterson tastefully highlights his excellent writing, though it also includes a couple of cover tunes as well. As a member of the popular trio Cry Cry Cry, Shindell has been getting a fair amount of public exposure since his last solo recording in 1997.

Simple yet rich, Shindell's treatment is hopeful but never overly sentimentalized. "You Stay Here" is vocally one of the best tracks on the CD; Shindell uses his rich, full voice to give weight to another simple story, revealing the heartbreak and hunger hidden between the lines.
