  1. 24. Okt. 2022 · Fabulous. The only serious problem with Members, Don’t Get Weary is the lack of piano solos, for Cowell only lets loose on the opening track. Gary Bartz, Another Earth with Stanley Cowell, Reggie Workman, and Freddie Waits, joined by Charles Tolliver and Pharoah Sanders on the title suite.

  3. 14. Juli 2023 · Arc Records are overjoyed to reissue pioneering jazz drummer Max Roach’s legendary 1968 album Members Don’t Git Weary out 14th July. This album marks the second instalment of a new series of special reissues from the storied archives of the Atlantic Jazz archive and personally curated by DJ and Broadcaster Gilles Peterson.

  4. From the moody melodicism of “Effi” to the hint of avantgarde spoken word on the title track, Members Don’t Git Weary is a masterclass of jazz performance. The closing song, “Absolutions”, in particular is an odyssey of rhythm, dark and moody tones, and carefully curated and improvised solos.

  5. 10. Aug. 2023 · ‘Effi’ is a hard bop derived theme with some wonderful exchanges between Tolliver and Bartz over some driving work from Roach. This restless and almost relentless onslaught from the drummer pushes Bartz into a finely wrought solo in which he refuses to be bullied along by the leader.

Jan. 2013 · One of the finest post-bop dates Roach recorded during that decade was 1968’s Members, Don’t Git Weary, which finds the drummer leading a cohesive modal quintet that employs Gary Bartz on alto sax, Charles Tolliver on trumpet, Stanley Cowell on acoustic and electric piano, and Jymie Merritt on electric bass.
