4. Feb. 2003 · FEBRUARY 4, 2013 – Singer DARLENE McCREA (b. c. 1938 in Bellhaven, North Carolina as Ethel McCrea) died of cancer. Best known as a founding member of The Cookies, and The Raelettes, McCrea began singing in church with her sisters as a youth in Brooklyn, New York.
The first lineup consisted of Darlene McCrea, Margie Hendricks, Patricia Lyles, and Gwendolyn Berry. [1] . The Raelettes were an integral part of Charles' organization and provided backing vocals on various hits, such as "Night Time Is the Right Time" (1958), "What'd I Say" (1959) and "Hit the Road Jack" (1961). [2]
American soul singer. Died February 4, 2013 at the age of 76. Founding member of The Cookies, left the group to join Raelets in 1958. Older sister of Earl-Jean McCrea and some websites say they were one person--but they weren't.
