Charlie Rouse (April 6, 1924 – November 30, 1988) was an American hard bop tenor saxophonist and flautist. His career is marked by his collaboration with Thelonious Monk, which lasted for more than ten years.

His decade-long collaboration with Monk brought forth some of the most celebrated works in jazz, including “Blue Monk,” “Round Midnight,” and “Straight, No Chaser.” Rouse’s distinct tenor tone became the perfect foil for Monk’s unorthodox piano style, and the two created music that was both challenging and compelling.
