John Martin Tchicai ( / tʃɪˈkaɪ / chih-KYE; 28 April 1936 – 8 October 2012) [1] was a Danish free jazz saxophonist and composer. Biography. Tchicai was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, to a Danish mother and a Congolese father. [2] .
John Martin Tchicai (* 28. April 1936 in Kopenhagen; † 8. Oktober 2012 in Perpignan, Frankreich) war ein dänischer Jazz - Saxophonist. Tchicai war als einziger europäischer Saxophonist an der Ausgestaltung des freien Jazz in New York Mitte der 1960er Jahre entscheidend beteiligt.
Poetry and audience-participation were often part of a Tchicai-performance. John composed for his own ensembles, but also for other jazz, and for classically trained ensembles: a.o. for wind-orchestra, for three celli + jazz quartet, for strings- and winds double quintet, percussion ensemble and symphony orchestra.
