The school, which was named for former superintendent L. Frazier Banks, occupied six buildings in a residential area of Birmingham's South East Lake neighborhood.

In the early 1960s, the school acquired a retired US Air Force F-86D/L “Sabre.” The plane was repainted blue and scarlet (the school’s colors) and became a landmark and mascot for the high school.
