  7. Quick Facts. Sergei Sergeievich Prokofiev was born in Sontsovka, Ekaterinoslav district, Ukraine, on April 27, 1891, and died at Nikolina Gora, near Moscow, on March 5, 1953. He composed most of the Symphony No. 5 during the summer of 1944 at a composers’ retreat in Ivanovo, Russia, and completed it in Moscow that autumn.
