Walter Davis Jr. (September 2, 1932 – June 2, 1990) was an American bebop and hard bop pianist. Davis once left the music world to be a tailor, but returned. A soloist, bandleader, and accompanist, he amassed a body of work while never becoming a high-profile name even within the jazz community.
This album, with no other horns present, bluesy/boppish piano support from Walter Davis, Jr., and the addition of Latin percussionist Montego Joe, feels like one of the classic sessions Gene Ammons recorded for Prestige, with Edwards’s reading of the ballad "But Beautiful" particularly outstanding.
Leben und Wirken. In seiner Jugend spielte Walter Davis mit der Gruppe Three Bips and a Bop von Bab’s Gonzalez. Er zog nach New York und spielte 1952 mit Max Roach und Charlie Parker. 1956 schloss er sich Dizzy Gillespies Big Band an und tourte mit ihr durch den Nahen Osten und Südamerika.
