Leeds Modern School was a school in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England. [1] History. Leeds Modern School was founded on 14 July 1845 in Rossington Street as the Mathematical and Commercial School. This building in the centre of Leeds became council offices after the school moved to a site at Lawnswood in 1931.

As The Mods have no Old Boys website of their own at present (aw, shame!), this page includes some basic info. about Leeds Modern School. The Mod grew out of The Mathematical and Commerce School, which was established in 1845 by The Leeds Mechanics' Institute, i.e. nine years before our school was founded.
Lawnswood High School and Leeds Modern School were combined into one large, mixed upper school, Lawnswood School, which operated from 1972. At the time of the merger, the houses were renamed after the Heads of House. They were Thompson, Rowe, Webber and Simpson.

Leeds Modern and Lawnswood. Leeds Modern School had originally been founded as a boys’ school by the Mechanics’ Institute in 1845. In 1854 the Ladies’ Educational Institution was opened in the basement of the Mechanic’s Institute. It changed its name to Leeds Girls’ Modern School in 1868.
