This building in the centre of Leeds became council offices after the school moved to a site at Lawnswood in 1931.

The Mod grew out of The Mathematical and Commerce School, which was established in 1845 by The Leeds Mechanics' Institute, i.e. nine years before our school was founded.

  7. Leeds Modern and Lawnswood. Leeds Modern School had originally been founded as a boysschool by the Mechanics’ Institute in 1845. In 1854 the Ladies’ Educational Institution was opened in the basement of the Mechanic’s Institute. It changed its name to Leeds Girls’ Modern School in 1868.
