Shortly after the death of Spencer Dryden, a reconstituted line-up of the New Riders began touring in late 2005. It features David Nelson and Buddy Cage, alongside guitarist Michael Falzarano, bassist Ronnie Penque, and drummer Johnny Markowski.

Die Band entstand 1969 in Marin County (Kalifornien). Jerry García, Mickey Hart und Phil Lesh kamen von den Grateful Dead, bald darauf schlossen sich ihnen John „Marmaduke“ Dawson und David Nelson an. Die NRPS spielten anfangs als Vorgruppe der Grateful Dead und bekamen 1970 einen Plattenvertrag.
Johnny Markowski. Johnny Markowski, an accomplished drummer, can be found playing his kit these days with The New Riders of the Purple Sage. When not on the road with The NRPS, Johnny works with his band, Stir Fried, and plays with various artists in many styles. Songwriting is also in his blood.
Johnny Markowski is a member of the legendary country-rock band The New Riders of the Purple Sage, along with David Nelson, Buddy Cage, Michael Falzarano and Ronnie Penque. He plays drums on their first studio album in over 20 years, Where I Come From, which features songs by Robert Hunter, Carl Perkins and more.
