18. Juni 2004 · Marcus Antonius Orator (died 87 BC) was a Roman politician of the Antonius family and one of the most distinguished Roman orators of his time. He started his cursus honorum as quaestor in 113 BC and in 102 BC he was elected praetor with proconsular powers for the province of Cilicia.
Antonius, Marcus, praetor pro consule 102 bce, then proconsul, fought against the Cilician pirates (see cilicia; piracy), triumphed late in 100, after participating in the action against L. *Appuleius Saturninus, and became consul 99. A friend of C. *Marius (1), with Arpinate connections, he delayed Q. *Caecilius Metellus Numidicus' return.
Seine beiden Großväter waren der Konsul und Zensor Marcus Antonius Orator sowie Lucius Iulius Caesar. Beide wurden 87 v. Chr. von den Marianern ermordet. Der Vater hinterließ der Familie nach seinem Tode einen Schuldenberg. Seine Mutter heiratete, als er im Kindesalter war, erneut.
