  7. John Gladstone was born in Leith, Scotland, the son of Thomas Gladstones, a grain merchant. He served his apprenticeship in a rope and sailcloth company, on completion of which he entered his father's business. He travelled widely on business and eventually settled in Liverpool where he made a small fortune as a partner in the
