According to the Spring 2000 edition of Revolver magazine Sting wrote the song in Ireland "during the hunger strikes in Belfast" - he certainly refers to Bobby Sands' hunger strike that went from 1981-03-01 until his death on 1981-05-05 (as specified for One World ).
