The Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service (SFS) is the school of international relations at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. It grants degrees at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
The Walsh School of Foreign Service awarded its first graduate degree in the early 1920s. Since that time, the SFS has continued to develop an innovative approach to graduate education for professional careers in international affairs.
Fr. Edmund A. Walsh’s vision was a school that would prepare students for all major forms of foreign representation — whether commercial, financial, consular or diplomatic.
After the Armistice of November 11, 1918, Georgetown University established a School of Foreign Service and appointed Walsh to lead it. The school, which was the first of its kind, was intended to advance international peace by training diplomats, businessmen, bankers, and merchants with an education focused on international relations.
