Lionel Duke of Clarence, Earl of Ulster and Baron of Connaught, was born on 29 November 1338 at Antwerp in Flanders, the second surviving son of King Edward III and Philippa of Hainaut, daughter of William III, 'the Good' Count of Holland and Hainaut, and Joan of Valois.
Having been named as his father's representative in England in 1345 and again in 1346, Lionel was created Earl of Ulster, and joined an expedition into France in 1355, but his chief energies were reserved for the affairs of Ireland.
