Homer Philip Groening (December 30, 1919 - March 15, 1996) was a Canadian-American filmmaker, advertiser, writer, and cartoonist. He was also the father of Matt Groening and inspired the names of Homer Simpson and Philip J. Fry. Groening was known for work on many different types of short films.
Homer was created by the cartoonist Matt Groening while he was waiting in the lobby of producer James L. Brooks 's office. Groening had been called to pitch a series of shorts based on his comic strip Life in Hell but instead created a new set of characters. He named the character after his father, Homer Groening.
Groening and Deborah Caplan married in 1986 and had two sons together, Homer (who goes by Will) and Abe, both of whom Groening occasionally portrays as rabbits in Life in Hell. The couple divorced in 1999.

Homer Groening was born on 30 December 1919 in Main Centre, Saskatchewan, Canada. He was a director and producer, known for A Study in Wet (1964), The Story (1969) and Basic Brown Basic Blue (1969). He was married to Margaret Wiggum. He died on 15 March 1996 in Portland, Oregon, USA.
