June 14, 2019. The Open Air School is a historic building in the Tuttle Park area of Old North Columbus in Columbus, Ohio. The building was constructed as a school, and today houses local a café, bar, a fitness center, and event space. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019.

22. Feb. 2022 · Go no further. Experience Columbus has rounded up the best things about this unique, close-to-nature dining experience! 1. Historic Space. Understory occupies a historic school building called the Open Air School, built in 1927 (yep, it’s nearly 100 years old!).
Built in 1928 and designed by Columbus schools architect Howard Dwight Smith, Open Air is an example of an early 20th century effort to provide an educational and healthful setting for the prevention of Tuberculosis in the most vulnerable children of the day.
2. Dez. 2021 · The former Neil Avenue Elementary School at 2571 Neil Ave. replaced a 1913 frame building built as an “open air” school, part of the city school system. The open air movement evolved from late 19th century efforts to control tuberculosis, which was rampant at the time.
