Bitter Ending is a recording of a work for eight voices composed by Andre Hodeir as commissioned by Ward Swingle. The work is performed by the Swingle Singers with a jazz quintet. This was the last work by Hodeir and is inspired by James Joyce 's Finnegans Wake [1] Personnel. Roger Guérin – trumpet. Pierre Gossez – saxophone.
Die Swingle Singers zeichnen sich aus durch eine leichte, flexible und schnelle Intonation und Stimmführung. Im selben Jahr komponierte er Bitter Ending für die Swingle Singers als zweiten Teil des Diptychons Jazz on Joyce. Außerdem komponierte er ein Jazz-Quintett zum Schlussmonolog von Finnegans Wake. Als Jazz-Kritiker errang er mit seiner wissenschaftlichen Herangehensweise schon früh allgemeine Anerkennung.
André Hodeir ’s “Bitter Ending” uses text from James Joyce’s “Finnegan’s Wake” in a modern jazz setting, and Michel Zbar’s “Swingle Novae” combines jazz, electronic music and Berio-esque orchestral writing.
There’s a certain irony that the last recording of the “original”, Paris-based Swingle Singers (in fact only four members were remaining from the original group that had recorded the chart-making “ Jazz Sébastien Bach ” at the end of 1962) should be titled “Bitter Ending”.

The Swingle Singers originally formed in 1962 in Paris under the leadership of Ward Swingle. In 1973, Swingle disbanded the French group, and formed an English group known initially as Swingle II and later as the New Swingle Singers, before settling on the Swingles name.
